Marriage Is Like An Obstacle Course

Last summer, my husband and I decided to conquer an above-the-ground obstacle and zipline course.  There were four levels, each one more challenging and higher off the ground than the last.  After suiting up with harnesses and attending a quick training lesson, we were up in the trees to begin our adventure together.

We started the course with a lot of confidence and enthusiasm.  But as we got further along and the challenges got tougher and higher, we each experienced uncertainty, apprehension, and fear at different points along the way.  When one of us was hesitant to proceed or unsure how to navigate a particular challenge, the other kicked in with encouraging words and helpful instructions, which made each hurdle feel conquerable.  Although it was the most physically challenging experience we faced in a long time, our constant communication, caring reassurances, and helpful suggestions got us through it successfully.

Marriage is a lot like an obstacle course.

We all start off enthusiastic and confident, ready to conquer life together.  But then, once we are deep into it, the challenges we face can be tougher than anticipated.  The ups, the downs, and the uncertainties of life can almost make our marriage feel insurmountable at times.

That reality is why marriage requires constant communication, loads of patience, and a whole bunch of teamwork to make it to the end successfully.  Nobody said relationships were easy.  But they can be the most rewarding and fulfilling when both spouses commit to doing the hard work together.
