Keeping Past Mistakes From Sabotaging Our Marriage

How do we keep our past mistakes or failures from sabotaging our marriage?

Each of us have relationship failures in our past.  Some of them ended against our will, but others resulted from our ungodly actions and attitudes.

Regardless, none of us want our marriages to fail.  We took vows and made promises before God and our spouse “until death do us part.”  But, sometimes, our past mistakes come back to haunt us.

So, how do we keep our past failures from sabotaging our marriage?  Here are a few steps to help us avoid it as Christians:

  • Own It.

We must recognize and take responsibility for our past failures.  It is key to helping us prevent repeat performances in our marriages.

  • Forgive Ourselves.

We must exonerate and release ourselves from our past sins and their accompanying bondage by God’s grace.  Beating ourselves up for what we cannot go back and change does nothing to bless or nurture our marriages.

  • Do It Differently.

We must choose not to repeat the same mistakes we made in the past.  We need to rely on God’s strength and power to do it; understanding change is never out of our reach.

Remember, if Jesus does not want our past sabotaging our marriages and future, why should we let it?

Are you allowing your past mistakes or failures to sabotage your marriage?  Do you need prayer?  Let me know in the comments.
