Demands Can Derail
Darnel and Sophia were married almost two years before Isabelle’s birth. They enjoyed spending time together, engaged in deep conversations about the future, and created a strong friendship and foundation for their growing family.
When Isabelle arrived, Darnel and Sophia focused on adjusting to their new roles as Mom and Dad. Not long after her birth, Darnel was offered a higher paying job, which promised to eradicate a considerable amount of their debt. The only catch was he needed to work the graveyard shift.
After thoroughly discussing it, Darnel and Sophia decided the financial benefit far outweighed the hours. He accepted the position and started his new job the following month.
With Darnel sleeping during the day and working at night, Sophia poured her energy into Isabelle. When weekends rolled around, the couple focused on household chores and co-parenting, inadvertently neglecting their marriage and friendship.
During Isabelle’s third birthday party, while mutually hugging their daughter for blowing out the candles, Darnel and Sophia realized the distance between them. They felt more like strangers than spouses, and it was the wake-up call they needed to turn things around.
I share this story to illustrate how easily life’s demands and responsibilities can derail a healthy marriage and friendship without either spouse recognizing the gradual, downward progression.
Couples must prioritize their relationship and nurture their friendship throughout life’s ups and downs because it is the foundation for marital survival and success.
