Avoiding Arguments
Here are some practical tips to help you avoid arguments while addressing marital issues.
Pray.
Always pray (together, if possible) before discussing the problem or concern. Ask Jesus to help you both communicate in a godly way, exercise the fruit of the Spirit, and direct you to a godly resolution.
Focus on the Issue.
Stay on topic when you discuss the marital issue or concern. This will help keep the conversation focused and prohibit “character assassinations” from occurring.
Do Not “React.”
Reacting out of heightened emotions only intensifies an already sensitive discussion. Commit to silently processing whatever your spouse says and only respond when you can exhibit verbal and emotional self-control. If that requires you to take a time-out, go for it!
Own Your Sins.
If you have contributed to the marital problem or issue, take responsibility for your part immediately and without excuse. Maintain your attitude of ownership throughout the discussion until a resolution is reached.
