Overcoming Discouragement
In Acts 27, the apostle Paul endured a horrendous, life-threatening storm while sailing to Rome on a large ship. Despite warning the captain not to set sail because it was too dangerous so late in winter, the boat’s owner and crew urged him to proceed, so he obliged.
For 13 days, the ship and its 275 passengers suffered immediate, relentless abuse from the storm. When its violence refused to let up, everyone on board gave up the hope of survival, including Paul.
As desperate as Paul's situation was and as hopeless as he felt, Jesus did not abandon him. He sent an angel to Paul at night to tell him not to be afraid because God would spare everyone's life on board. He also disclosed God's upcoming plan for Paul's life, which reignited his hope of survival and eradicated any impending fears he would face during the inevitable shipwreck to come.
I love this account because Jesus’ words to Paul through the angel were certain, true, and could do nothing but come to pass (Numbers 23:19). They filled Paul with incredible hope and immovable faith when facing an otherwise discouraging and hopeless situation—and they can do the same for us!
God’s written Word contains specific encouragements, instructions, and promises in writing to help us overcome hopeless discouragement and crippling fears that unavoidably come our way. Plus, reading it increases our faith, encourages our spirits, trains us in righteousness, and assures us of God’s plans for our lives.
