Recovering From A Spiritual "Power Failure"

We all experience “power failures” in the obedience department.  At those moments, Satan loves to heap condemnation and shame on us, which adds to our discouragement.  What we do in those moments determines whether we will continue growing spiritually or shrink back in our faith.

Here are three things you can do to keep yourself maturing spiritually after a “power failure:”

  1. Own It and Repent.  When you disobey God, take responsibility for your sins and repent.  Acts 3:19 says, “Therefore repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord.”

  2. Move Forward in Grace.  Once you ask for forgiveness, trust that God has cleansed you and move forward with Jesus by faith.  Wallowing in doubt or self-condemnation keeps you in neutral or moves you backward spiritually. 1 John 1:9-10 says, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

  3. Rely on the Holy Spirit’s Power.  Ask the Holy Spirit for the power and strength to obey God and His Word.  2 Peter 1:3 says, “His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue.”

We have all struggled with letting our failures halt our spiritual growth.  But Jesus’ heart is always for us to “get up, get over it, and get on with it.”

What is keeping you from growing in your faith?
