When Your Spouse Does Not Support Your Calling

Are you struggling to fulfill God’s calling because your spouse is not on board with it? Are you fighting off discouragement from their lack of emotional support?  Those are never easy roads to travel.

Here are a few steps you can take to help with those challenges:

  • Have a Heart-To-Heart.

Have a transparent conversation with your spouse about how you are feeling and what you need from them.  Explain how their opposition affects you and allow them an opportunity to change their mind or position (Proverbs 25:11-12).

  • Obey God Over Man.

Remember that God will reward your faithfulness to His calling even if your spouse opposes you.  Jesus never promised our obedience would be easy, but He promised to be with us every step of the way (Acts 5:29).

  • Find Supplemental Support.

Connect with other believers who share your calling or gifts.  It can help encourage you to press forward whenever you feel alone.  Choose a support system prayerfully and use godly wisdom throughout the selection process (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Finally, remember this.  When God called you to fulfill His plans for your life, He did not make it contingent upon you receiving your spouse’s support or approval.

God’s calling was an ordained, sovereign decision made specifically for you, and He gave you the gifts, abilities, and opportunities to accomplish it with or without spousal support.  You can do this!  Jesus has you in His hands!
