Walking Others Through Hardship

Are you unsure of how to walk with someone through seasons of hardship? “Helen” was a complete stranger to me but, as I listened to her describe how she endured decades of her husband’s infidelity yet blamed herself every time, I was heartbroken.

When she explained how she forgave him and moved forward in her marriage despite his lack of repentance and continual justifications for his actions, I was stunned.

But when “Helen” expressed how she finally reached her breaking point after being pressured by her husband into accepting a “Christian” polygamous marriage and second wife, I was righteously indignant!

My heart broke for this shattered woman, and everything inside of me wanted to rescue her from her husband’s unrelenting emotional, psychological, and spiritual abuse.  So, I had to do something!

I immediately came alongside “Helen” and empathized with her pain.  I expressed how sorry I was for what she had endured all these years and asked what I could do to help her get through this heart-wrenching ordeal.  Despite me being a complete stranger, I offered her my unconditional support and encouragement.  I also told her I would walk beside her through this painful journey if she wanted me to because I did not want her doing it alone.

Without hesitation, “Helen” took me up on my offer.

Sixteen months later, I can tell you with absolute certainty that me coming alongside her to listen, empathize, encourage, support, and speak the truth to her has been life-changing for her throughout this time.

I share this story because it is not always what we say that makes a difference in people’s lives.  It is us showing the love of Jesus by offering them a shoulder to cry on, a hug when they are hurting, or an empathetic ear to listen to their pain.  These things may seem like insignificant gestures, but they can breathe life into someone who is drowning.  Never underestimate the power of love in Jesus’ name.

What tangible thing will you do today to “walk with someone” who is struggling through a hardship season?  Let me know in the comments.
