The Key To Avoiding Ministry Burnout

The Bible records Jesus sending His 12 disciples on their first ministry assignment. He gave them authority to preach, cast out demons, and heal the sick, then sent them on their way to accomplish it all (Mark 6:7-13).

When His disciples returned, they reported everything to Jesus they had done and taught. Immediately afterward, Jesus said, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest” (Mark 6:31). So, they went with Him by boat to a secluded location.

We easily underestimate the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual toll ministry takes—especially when we are knee-deep in it. We also tend to burn “the ministry candle” at both ends because we do not realize we have depleted our reserves, making us vulnerable to burnout.

I love Jesus’ wisdom-filled words to His 12 disciples because they were not just for them. They apply to us today, too!

Jesus understands our human limitations better than anyone and recognizes our need for regular recharging with Him to avoid burnout in ministry. He is also keenly aware of the guilt that plagues us when we try to set boundaries to keep from burning out. So, His words, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest,” are a refreshing reminder that taking breaks and setting boundaries are okay.

Are you suffering from ministry burnout or headed in that direction? Let me know in the comments so I can encourage and pray for you.
