Birds Don't Worry

It was not too long ago that I found myself consumed by worry over serving Jesus.  Every ounce of my being wanted to please Him and fulfill every purpose He had for my life and ministry.  But, I was faced with constant confusion and uncertainty about His specific plan for me, which left me anxious, distressed, and incredibly frustrated.

One day, I was studying Matthew 6:25-34 in preparation for a Bible study I would be teaching the following month.  As I unpacked each passage, verse 26 hit me like a brick in the face:

“Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them.  Are you not of more value than they?”

As I read that verse, something clicked that I had not recognized before.

Birds spend their days fulfilling their God-given purpose, including pollinating plants, controlling the insect population, building nests, and caring for their young.  They are not worried about their next meal or standing on a fence post waiting for worms to drop from the sky into their mouths.  They do what they were created for, and God meets their ongoing needs.

The same is true for us!

Our days should be spent fulfilling our God-given purpose to glorify Jesus and seek after His righteousness (verse 33).  As we do, God will take care of our various needs, including directing our steps, opening the right doors, providing for us financially, and accomplishing His specific will for our lives, callings, and ministries.

Are you spending your time worrying about “things” and “needs” instead of fulfilling your God-given purpose?
