Godly Decisions And Utter Confusion Often Intermingle

Pam and I were friends for a few years (not her real name). Our relationship began when I discipled her in God’s Word and helped her overcome some personal insecurities. But it eventually morphed into a close friendship where we talked almost daily.

A few years into the relationship, I began feeling overwhelmed and a bit suffocated by her continuous wants and needs. My husband and friends even noticed some red flags and a few unhealthy behaviors and brought them to my attention. Although it pained my heart, I knew Jesus was leading me to terminate the friendship for these and other reasons. I had complete peace about my decision, so I explained my reasons to Pam and ended our relationship.

Confusion and regret followed a few months later, and I second-guessed my God-ordained decision. I willfully reinstated my friendship with Pam but instituted healthy boundaries to protect myself from her unusual attachment toward me.

Shortly after that decision, Jesus showed and convinced me that my original choice was the right one, and I needed to reinstitute it immediately. This revelation came after arriving home one day.

Pam told me she had left something for me at my house. But when I discovered it, I instantly got the willies. I will not disclose what it was, but it clearly indicated that her attachment to me was unhealthier than I previously understood.

I ended things with her permanently immediately afterward.

Through this experience and others, Jesus taught me to “stick to my guns” when the Holy Spirit has led me in a decision. It was not easy to learn because my heart often undermined God’s peace in my mind. But I now understand I must trust Jesus’ leadership, knowing He sees what I cannot, and never allow my good intentions to usurp His authority.

What about you? Are you facing a big decision but are having difficulty hearing, obeying, or trusting the Holy Spirit’s voice? If so, I would love to pray for you. Simply comment below.
